Axedale Quick Shear History
In 2013 an Axedale Quick Shear committee was formed with 8 representatives from the Axedale Primary School, Axedale Preschool and Axedale Public Hall.
The committee was eager to hold a Quick Shear Competition to raise money for these groups and to provide a different entertainment opportunity for the Axedale community to enjoy. The first Quick Shear was held in January 2014 and was a great success. The event has been held annually, initially on the last weekend in January but now in February, and is now run by Axedale Events Inc. whose primary goal is to hold events for the purpose of raising funds for the benefit of the local community.
The Axedale Events committee now has 18 members – along with representatives from Axedale Primary School, Axedale Preschool and Axedale Public Hall there are now also representatives from local CFA and members of the local community. The committee are passionate not only to achieve our purpose, but in doing so, provide the local area with a fantastic day to come together as a community.
The committee is of course too small to run an event this big alone, so we rely heavily on the local community to volunteer on the day. It still amazes us that from a small area we have about 60 willing volunteers helping us make the event not only a fabulous day for everyone but a successful fundraising effort too.
What started in 2014 with a quick shear competition combined with jumping castles, market stalls, raffles and a spinning wheel and has evolved into the ‘Axedale Quick Shear and Family Fun Day’. The event now also includes a silent auction, face painting, a petting zoo, a range of novelty activities, a photography competition, a shearing-inspired ‘Smoko’ afternoon tea and much more.

Supporting the Local Community
The funds raised from the event have made a significant difference to each of the beneficiaries with the money being spent on much needed infrastructure and equipment.
The Primary School has:
- Installed a water bore in the school grounds to increase their capacity for irrigating the grounds and garden areas.
- Put funds received towards a major project to construct a roof over the school’s multi-purpose court.
The Public Hall has:
- Installed air-conditioning/heating (with additional assistance from the City of Greater Bendigo)
- Installed new blinds throughout the Hall.
The CFA has been able to build a new storage shed and purchase much needed new equipment.
The Pre School has been able to purchase new play equipment.
